Communication Revolution: Critical Junctures and the Future of Media

Communication Revolution: Critical Junctures and the Future of Mediaby Robert W. McChesneyNew Press, The

In this brilliant new book, Robert W. McChesney, one of America's leading media scholars and activists, brings both his authoritative analysis and unparalleled historical knowledge to bear on the growing but only fitfully successful field of media criticism and scholarship.

McChesney explains why we are in the midst of a communication revolution that is at the center of twenty-first-century life. Yet this profound juncture is not well understood, in part, because our media criticism and media scholarship have not been up to the task. Why is media not at the center of political debate? Why are students of the media considered second-class scholars?

With a concise history of media studies, McChesney explains the important work of analysts like Noam Chomsky, Marshall McLuhan, and Alexander Meiklejohn, while showing how communication scholarship grew increasingly irrelevant in recent years, even as media became a decisive issue of our times. Now the burgeoning media reform movement, in which McChesney has been a key player, has made it even more clear that the revolution in communication demands a political and intellectual revolution as well.

Shaping the Political Arena: Critical Junctures, the Labor Movement, and Regime Dynamics in Latin America

by Ruth Berins CollierPrinceton Univ Pr

Illuminating the dynamics of political change in Latin America during the twentieth century, this ambitious work traces the impact of a "critical juncture": a period of fundamental political reorientation in which countries are set on distinct trajectories of change. Here Ruth Berins Collier and David Collier focus on the response of national states to the newly radicalized working class and organized labor movements that arose earlier in this century in the course of capitalist modernization. They examine the incorporation of the labor movement, showing how national leaders--including Percn in Argentina and Vargas in Brazil--sought to impose a new political and institutional framework on working-class politics. Through a comparative-historical analysis of eight countries, the authors show how different strategies of control and mobilization left distinct legacies in terms of political coalitions, party systems, and modes of political conflict. These outcomes in turn influenced patterns of regime change, including the democratic or authoritarian path each country followed through the turbulent 1960s and 1970s. The concluding chapter asks whether Latin America may now be entering a new critical juncture.

Savage Junctures: Sergei Eisenstein and the Shape of Thinking (Kino - the Russian Cinema)

Savage Junctures: Sergei Eisenstein and the Shape of Thinking (Kino - the Russian Cinema)by Anne NesbetI. B. Tauris

KINO The Russian Cinema Series:
This series of books examines Russian and Soviet film in their historical and aesthetic context, both as a major cultural force in Russian history and Soviet politics and as a crucible for experimentation that is central to the development of world cinema culture. Drawing authors from both East and West, the books in this series combine the best of scholarship with a style of writing that is accessible to a broad readership, whether that readership's primary interest lies in cinema or in Russian and Soviet political history.

Savage Junctures provides fresh insights into Eisenstein's films and writings. It examines the multiple contexts within which his films evolved and Eisenstein's appropriation of all of world culture as his source.  Like Eisenstein himself, Anne Nesbet is particularly interested in the possibilities of visual image making and each chapter addresses the problem of his image-based thinking from a different perspective.  Each chapter also offers a fundamentally new interpretation of the films and writings that make up his oeuvre. This is a major new contribution to studies in Soviet cinema and culture and to the field of film studies, now available in paperback for the first time.

Global governance 2025: at a critical juncture.

Global governance 2025: at a critical juncture.by National Intelligence Council (U.S.);Books LLC, Reference Series

OCLC Number: 664588891 Excerpt: ... • For participants from the Persian Gulf region, the question is what sort of global institutions are most capable of inclusive power sharing. They bemoaned the lack of strong regional organizations. • The Indians thought existing international organizations are " grossly inadequate " and worried about an " absence of an internal equilibrium in Asia to ensure stability. " They felt that India is not well positioned to help develop regional institutions for Asia given China's preponderant role in the region. • Russian experts we consulted see the world in 2025 as still one of great powers but with more opportunities for transnational cooperation. The Russians worried about the relative lack of " transpacific security. " The United States, Europe, and Russia also have scope for growing much closer, while China, " with the biggest economy, " will be the main factor in changing the world. • The South Africans assessed that globalization appears to be strengthening regionalization as opposed to creating a single global polity. They worried that the losers from globalization increasingly outnumber the winners. In addition to the shift to a multipolar world, power is also shifting toward nonstate actors, be they agents or spoilers of cooperation. On a positive note, transnational nongovernmental organizations, civil-society groups, churches and faith-based organizations, multinational corporations, other business bodies, and interest groups have been equally, if not more effective than states at reframing issues and mobilizing publics - a trend we expect to continue. However, hostile nonstate actors such as criminal organizations and terrorist networks, all empowered by existing and new technologies, can pose serious security threats and compound systemic risks. Many developing countries - which are likely to play an increasing role at the regional and global level - also suffer from a relative paucity of nonstate actors, that cou...

The American State Of Canaan: The Peaceful, Prosperous Juncture Of Israel And Palestine As The 51st State Of The United States Of

The American State Of Canaan: The Peaceful, Prosperous Juncture Of Israel And Palestine As The 51st State Of The United States Ofby Alfred De GraziaMetron Publications

Endless violence, terror and destruction have beset Palestine and Israel for over 60 years and brought instability and war to the Middle East. No formula for peace or welfare has worked. America has deeply compromised its moral and political leadership. The author proposes a stunning solution - the union of the Israeli and Palestinian people, including the Palestinian refugees, in the ancient region of Canaan, the biblical "land of milk and honey," simulatenously with the admission of Canaan to the United States of America as the 51st State. Make of the people of Canaan full citizens of the United States, with the right to settle anywhere in the United States and in Canaan. For every objection to Statehood, there springs forth an answer, and the answers add up to a peaceful and prosperous Union. The endless traumas, terrors and threats visited upon the people of the Middle East would diminish exponentially, and the moral stature of the United States would be restored.

Juncture In Time

Juncture In Timeby Robert T. JeffersonRed Anvil Press

The author describes routine analysis of failed products - a fallen bridge vs. fallen Modern Man, represented on the cover by the Statue of Liberty. The difference is our willingness to accept and deal with both the wreckage and the way failure came about, shown in the cover s foreground. A bridge is intended to get us from here to there, as is God s Commandments. The difference is, those two stone tablets are indestructible. Juncture in Time honors the works of many authors whom, throughout the past century, have warned us of the corruption of liberty and other dangers threatening Western civilization. They are my voices crying in the wilderness - none more urgently than G.K. Chesterton and C.S. Lewis. C.S. Lewis predicted that the twenty-first century will be one of two things. Either it will be the best since the thirteenth, or the worst since the twenty-first BC.
